Abortion

April 21, 2008 / by chopsui101

Recently a doctor decided to open an abortion clinic in my area.  After reading about the abortion clinic, I couldn't help but groan thinking about the countless letters written by both the Pro lifers and Pro Choicers. The letters I have read are nothing but a bunch of emotionally charged garbage. First, as much as you might hate it, people have the right to make decisions with out you deciding for them. Most people agree abortion is a sad thing. The way to fight abortion is not force your ideas on to someone else, but through education. In the anti smoking movement, they passed laws taxing cigarettes, then used the money to educated kids about the danger of smoking. Why would that not work with abortion? Sure some people still do, but the numbers are certainly down. Also investigations, because abortion clinics have been known to give out false, misleading, and altogether illegal advice to women. Prosecute those clinics that do. Now to the pro choice group, the argument it is your body, and you can do what you want to it is foolish. Tell that to every cocaine, meth, or drug fiend, their bodies their choice. In fact you can't even commit suicide with out the government trying to stop you. Secondly, coming from the ultra liberal city of Portland, I have seen it all. I don't think that demonstrating your support for abortion by wearing a t-shirt saying "I had an abortion and am proud of it" is such a good idea. Show a little class. The fact that in some cities a girl under age can get an abortion with out parents consent is foolish, since all medical attention is required to be approved by their guardian. In closing, what am I? I'm pro responsibility, taking responsible action to eliminate a problem by educating people about other alternatives.

Good article! I'm way over the top pro-life, but could talk to someone that tried to be reasosnable, Your point of being "pro responsibility" was a good one. The t-shirt wearing pro choicers you speak of baffle me. If it is such a "hard choice" and women have a right to privacy and all, why boast about such a tragidy on a t-shirt? Cry

There's some good practical wisdom in the smoking comparision and the use of social pressure and dis-incentives.  Some good ideas here.

I am totally pro life. But you are right, I don't tell people how to live their lives. I agree with the education and the right for parents to know. Being a parent myself, to a boy, I would appreciate it if I knew.

actually I am pretty conservative myself...however, I know I do things that some main line conservatives wouldn't approve of and I would feel very angry or resentful if they tried to take away things in my life....
